Edit Item: Text or Simple Text

Use this page to edit information about the item. If you are editing a Simple Text item, you can edit the text and display name. If you are editing a Text item, there will be additional attributes that you can edit. If you are editing an item based on a custom text item type, the attributes may be different from the ones listed here, and may include custom attributes.

Item Version Control

This section appears only if the item versioning level for the page or page group is Simple or Audit.

Item Version Control

Select:

  • Add Item As New Version, but not as Current Version to add the item as a new version but not immediately display it on the page. You can change it to the current version later.
  • Add Item As New and Current Version to add the item as a new version and immediately display it on the page.
  • Overwrite Current Version to overwrite the previous version of the item.

Note: For the first two options, OracleAS Portal maintains a record of the item's previous versions. The third option is available only if the item versioning level is Simple.

Item Attributes

The following attributes are available if you are editing a Simple Text or Text item.

Field Description
Text

Edit the text for this item.

Notes:

  • The text size is limited to 32 KB. Note that HTML tags within the text increase the size of the text item. If the text is larger than 32 KB, create another text item, or add the text as a file item.
  • To display the current user's name in this item, you can enter the following in the Text field:
    • #USER#, for the user's name
    • #USER.FULLNAME#, for the user's full name
  • If you are using Internet Explorer, this field is displayed as a WYSIWYG editor, where you can apply formatting without needing to know the corresponding HTML code. In Netscape, the field is a multi-line text field.
Display Name

Edit the descriptive display name of the item.

Note: Users click the display name to view the item. It should be as descriptive as possible.

The following additional attributes are available if you are editing a Text item.

Field Description
Category

Choose the category that best describes the item.

Note: This list includes all those categories that the page group administrator has made available to the page group.

Description Enter a description for the item.
Publish Date

Enter the date on which to make the item available.

Note: When the published date is reached, the item becomes visible to users viewing the page. Until that date the item is visible only in Edit mode.

Expiration Period

Select:

  • Never Expires to display the item indefinitely. The item will be available until it is deleted or manually expired.
  • Expires In to display the item for a specific number of days after the publish date. Enter the number of days in the adjacent field.
  • Expires On to display the item until a specific date and time. Enter the date (in the format DD-MON-YYYY HH12:MI PM) in the adjacent field.

Note: When an item expires, it is no longer visible to users viewing the page. The item is still visible in Edit mode where it can be edited and unexpired if desired.

Perspectives

Select the perspectives that best describe the item in the Available Perspectives field, then click Move Right.

Notes:

  • The Available Perspectives list includes all those perspectives that the page group administrator has made available to the page group.
  • The order of perspectives in the Displayed Perspectives list determines the order in which the perspectives are displayed next to the item (if perspectives are displayed in the region that contains the item).
Image

Enter the details of an image to associate with the item. Use the first field (Enter or browse for the image on your file system) to enter or browse for the image on your file system. Use the second field (Enter the URL or uploaded name of the image) to enter the URL of the image or the internal name of a previously uploaded image.

Note: To find the internal name of a previously uploaded image, find the image in the portal, right click your mouse, and select Properties. The internal name will be a numeric value, for example, 1645.GIF. If the image name is not numeric, it is not an uploaded image and cannot be reused.

Image Alignment Choose how to align the image on the page.
Basic Search Keywords Enter keywords to help users locate the item in a basic search. Separate each keyword with a space or punctuation character, for example, a comma.
Author Enter the name of the author of the item.
Enable Item Check-Out Select this check box to enable document control. This allows content contributors to make sure that nobody else can edit the item while they are editing it themselves.
Display Options

Select:

  • Item Displayed Directly In Page Area to display the content of the item directly in the page, so that user's do not have to click the display name link.
  • Link That Displays Item In Full Browser Window to replace the current page with the content of the item when users click the display name link.
  • Link That Displays Item In New Browser Window to open a new browser window to display the content of the item when users click the display name link.

Note: If you choose to display the item directly in the page area, the item content is displayed in the page, even if the Item Content attribute is not displayed in the region.

  1. In the Page Groups portlet, under Edit a Page, click Browse Pages next to the Name field.
  2. Select the page on which you want to edit an item, then click Edit.
  3. Click Edit next to a Text or Simple Text item.

Tip: By default the Page Groups portlet is located on the Build tab of the Builder page.
